Notes

Matthew says that the leaven of the Pharisees refers to their false teaching (Matthew 16:12). It might also refer to their unbelief and stubbornness (Mark 8:10–13).

The reference to Herod could suggest he was unwilling to accept what he knew to be true (6:14, 16, 20).

This story of the journey across the Sea of Galilee reflects on the greatness of Jesus, shown in the two feeding miracles. It also emphasizes the disciples’ lack of understanding.

They do not see, hear, or understand because their hearts are hardened (not open to learning; see 4:9–20; 6:52).
