Notes

The mention of having only one loaf of bread reminds Mark's audience of earlier times when the disciples did not have enough food. On those occasions, Jesus miraculously provided enough bread to feed thousands of people.

This story of the journey across the Sea of Galilee reflects on the greatness of Jesus, shown in the two feeding miracles. It also emphasizes the disciples’ lack of understanding.

They do not see, hear, or understand because their hearts are hardened (not open to learning; see 4:9–20; 6:52).
