Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
Literal
A vessel had been set there, full of sour wine; therefore, having put on a stalk of hyssop a sponge filled with sour wine, they brought it to the mouth.

Notes

In Egypt, people used the hyssop bush to apply lamb's blood on door posts and its upper threshold (lintel) during the first Passover (Exodus 12:22). Jesus is God's Passover lamb, and his blood also saves (John 1:29, 36).
