One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink.

Notes

The sour wine was vinegar. The drink was probably meant to mock Jesus by pretending to ease his thirst (compare Psalm 69:21 with Matthew 27:34). Although some scholars think they offered it as a genuine act of kindness.
