we were hoping He was the One who would redeem Israel: This refers to the Messiah. The crucifixion had ended their hopes.

Luke alone records this resurrection appearance. Jesus corrected the disciples’ misunderstanding by showing from the Scriptures that the Christ had to suffer. Then he opened their eyes to understand that he had risen from the dead.
