Notes

outlaw: The Greek word here typically means "thief." However, the Romans used this term for violent revolutionaries who opposed Roman authority (such as Barabbas, 23:18–19). To many patriotic Jews, these revolutionaries were seen as freedom fighters. To the Romans, they were violent criminals.
