Notes
The punishment was severe—slaughter and exile—because the people of Judah broke the two most important commandments. They did not love God (Deuteronomy 6:4–5), and they did not love their neighbors (Leviticus 19:18; see also Matthew 22:37–40).
Jeremiah's message had two parts:
Judgment does not remove future hope (Jeremiah 16:14–15)
Hope does not eliminate the certainty of judgment (Jeremiah 16:16–18).
Jeremiah's life served as a sign or parable (see “Prophetic Sign Acts” Theme Note). The Lord instructed him not to marry (Jeremiah 16:1–4), not to attend funerals (16:5–7) or celebrations (16:8–9).
