Notes
In exile, Israel was in a lowly state.
God is the Redeemer. He works powerfully to rescue and restore people from sin and its consequences (for Israel, it was the exile; for an application to Jesus, see Luke 2:38; 21:28; Romans 3:24; 1 Corinthians 1:30; Galatians 4:5; Ephesians 1:1–14; Titus 2:14; Hebrews 9:12).
These two prophecies about salvation for God's servant Israel (Isaiah 41:8–13, 14–16) prepare for the first of the suffering servant songs (see study note on Isaiah 42:1–4).
