"Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree": Paul quotes Deuteronomy 21:23, in which criminals who were killed and had their bodies displayed in public were considered to be under God's curse (see study note on Deuteronomy 21:22). When Jesus was nailed to the cross, he took on God's curse that should have fallen on all sinners (compare 2 Corinthians 5:21).
