Translations
Modern
Even if you go and fight bravely in battle, God will overthrow you before the enemy, for God has power to help and power to overthrow.”
Traditional
But if thou wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
Literal
But if you are going, do it—be strong in the battle; God shall make you fall before the enemy, for unto God is power to help and to cause to stumble.”
Latin
…quod si putas in robore exercitus bella consistere, superari te faciet Deus ab hostibus: Dei quippe est et adjuvare, et in fugam convertere.
Original
Hebrew
English
Even if you go and fight bravely in battle, God will overthrow you before the enemy, for God has power to help and power to overthrow.”
Notes
The phrase a man of God referred to a prophet (as in Deuteronomy 33:1; 1 Samuel 2:27; 9:6–10; 1 Kings 13:1–31).
The kingdom of Israel was politically foreign and spiritually unfaithful. Relying on Israel's troops for military strength would lead to spiritual compromise and God's opposition.
