There is a river whose streams delight the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.

Notes

This river provides life, renewal, and healing like the streams flowing through Eden (Psalm 36:8–9; see Genesis 2:10; Ezekiel 47; Revelation 22:2).

The strong city, where God lives, protects its people. They enjoy the river flowing within the city. This river is calm, unlike the turbulent waters (representing the powers of the nations) outside the city.

This psalm of Zion celebrates God's special presence in Jerusalem (see also Psalms 48, 76, 87, 122). It encourages trust in the Lord because the people of Zion have his protection.
