Notes

  • The knowledge … has been given to you: God allowed the disciples to understand the importance of Jesus. God also allowed them to respond to the message of Jesus about the kingdom of heaven with faith and obedience (see 13:19, 23).

  • the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven: Salvation is available through Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament promises.

Jesus answered the disciples question in verse 10. He told them that the Jews' stubborn disbelief and rejection of him brought God's condemnation.

In the third major speech recorded by Matthew (see study note on Matthew 5:1–7:29), Jesus here recognized the separation of his followers from others (Matthew 13:14, 16). He began to reveal the secrets of the kingdom of heaven privately to them through parables.
