The disciples wanted to understand the prophecy that Elijah must come first before the Messiah (see Malachi 4:5–6). They wondered how this prophecy fit with the teachings of Jesus about God's kingdom and his own death, resurrection, and second coming (Mark 8:31, 38; 9:9).
