Notes

  • I am: Compare with study note on 6:49–50. Mark's audience has known from the beginning that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God (1:1). This was acknowledged:

But this is the first time that Jesus openly and publicly acknowledged that he was the Christ (the Messiah, God's chosen one).

  • The second part of the reply Jesus gave was that he would sit at God’s right hand, the place of power and honor. This pointed forward to his resurrection and ascension (Luke 24:50–51; Acts 1:9–11; see Philippians 2:9; Hebrews 1:3) and his triumphal coming on the clouds of heaven to judge the world.

At the return of Jesus, roles will be reversed. Those judging the Son of Man will be judged by him.

The account of the trial of Jesus begins immediately after his arrest. Some scholars have questioned whether the Gospel accounts are historically reliable because they differ in some details from the rules found in the Mishnah tractate Sanhedrin. However, several points should be considered.

  1. The Mishnah was written around AD 200, while the Gospel of Mark was written in the late AD 60s, more than 130 years earlier.

  2. The rules in Mishnah Sanhedrin describe what later rabbis believed should happen in such trials. They do not necessarily describe what actually happened.

  3. It is uncertain whether the Sadducees who led the Sanhedrin would have followed the Pharisaic rules found in the Mishnah Sanhedrin (see Acts 23:6–10).

  4. Some rules in the Mishnah Sanhedrin differ from what the Jewish historian Josephus wrote.

  5. Laws were not always followed in practice. Jesus was being tried by a court that had already decided the outcome and only needed a charge to justify the sentence (Mark 14:55).

  6. There is no strong reason to consider the Sanhedrin Mishnah more reliable than the Gospel accounts if the two differ.
