Original

Greek
English
“Ha! What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

Notes

  • Have you come to destroy us?: Although there was only one demon present, the use of us suggests that all of Satan’s forces knew about and were fearful of the coming of Jesus.

  • I know who You are: In ancient times, people believed that naming a spiritual power gave them control over it. The demon might have been trying to gain power over Jesus.
