Notes

The plural form of people means all peoples (see study note on 2:9–10). It includes both Jews and Gentiles. Gentiles are people who are not part of the Jewish people.

This third great hymn of the birth narrative is called the Nunc dimittis (“now dismiss”), from the first words of the Latin translation. The hymn praises God for allowing Simeon to see God’s salvation.
