my eyes have seen Your salvation: This phrase echoes Isaiah 52:12. The wording is similar and recalls the language of that passage.

This third great hymn of the birth narrative is called the Nunc dimittis (“now dismiss”), from the first words of the Latin translation. The hymn praises God for allowing Simeon to see God’s salvation.
