Notes

  • The prophet Isaiah predicted that the kingdom of God would bring salvation to all the nations (Isaiah 42:6–7; 49:6).

  • the glory of your people Israel: This quote from Isaiah 46:13 says that God’s salvation will bring glory to Israel. Israel’s role in the Old Testament was to bring glory to God by revealing God’s light to the nations.

This third great hymn of the birth narrative is called the Nunc dimittis (“now dismiss”), from the first words of the Latin translation. The hymn praises God for allowing Simeon to see God’s salvation.
