Notes

  • Jesus foretold that the Romans would surround and destroy Jerusalem in AD 70. The Jewish historian Josephus describes the terrible suffering of the people in Jerusalem during the Roman siege (War 5.1.1–7.1.1).

  • will not leave one stone on another: This expression describes complete destruction.
