Notes
the Dawn will visit us from on high: The Old Testament identifies the Messiah (Christ) as a light shining in darkness (Isaiah 9:2; 42:6–7; 49:6; Malachi 4:2).
This second song of praise in the birth story of Jesus is called the Benedictus (Latin for “Blessed” or “Praise”). The song expects that God’s Messiah (his chosen leader) will save the Israelites from their enemies. Salvation includes physical rescue and forgiveness of sins (1:77).
