  • And you, child: Zechariah turned from speaking about the coming Messiah to address his newborn son, John, who would prepare the Messiah’s way.

  • called a prophet of the Most High: JJohn was the last and greatest in the line of Old Testament prophets (see 7:28).

  • prepare the way for Him: See Isaiah 40:3.

This second song of praise in the birth story of Jesus is called the Benedictus (Latin for “Blessed” or “Praise”). The song expects that God’s Messiah (his chosen leader) will save the Israelites from their enemies. Salvation includes physical rescue and forgiveness of sins (1:77).
