Notes

These Jews were not like the crowd who thought the Christ (the Messiah) would have a mysterious appearance (7:25–27). They believed the prophecy that God's chosen ruler would come from Bethlehem in Judea (see Micah 5:2). However, they struggled with the fact that Jesus seemed to be from Galilee, where he grew up.

This chapter describes Jesus at the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus used parts of the feast to reveal his true identity to his fellow Jews and to show that he had fulfilled the feast's essential meaning (see 7:37–39; 8:12).
