How then can a man be just before God? How can one born of woman be pure?

Notes

Eliphaz stated that being innocent or pure is almost impossible (4:17–19; 15:14–16). A person can achieve it only after suffering (22:21–23). Bildad argued that only those who are completely blameless can hope to be pure (8:20).
