Notes
Widows and orphans are usually special objects of God’s compassion and care (Isaiah 1:17, 23; 10:2). However, when they remained unrepentant, they also faced God’s wrath. This means they experienced his judgment. God’s judgment was not based on social position, but on whether people turned back to him.
God used punishment to call his people to repentance. Repentance means turning away from sin and turning back to God. His goal was not to destroy Israel, but to correct them and bring them back to himself.
However, Israel had become apostate. This means they had turned away from the Lord and rejected him. They refused to repent or to seek the Lord.
These prophecies occurred when Assyria rose to power. Syria and Israel formed an alliance against Judah (Isaiah 7:1–2; see 2 Kings 16:5). God used Assyria as a tool to punish Syria, Israel, and Judah (Isaiah 7–10).
