Translations

Modern
Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes the straw, and as dry grass shrivels in the flame, so their roots will decay and their blossoms will blow away like dust; for they have rejected the instruction of the LORD of Hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Traditional
Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Literal
Therefore as the tongue of fire devours the chaff and the flame consumes the stubble, their root will be as rottenness, and their blossom will go up like dust, because they have rejected the instruction of YHWH of hosts, and the Word of the Holy One of Israel they have despised.

Notes

  • The image of rotting roots reflects human transience (the short and fragile nature of human life; see Isaiah 11:1; 27:6; 37:31).

  • To despise the Lord’s word means to reject or ignore it. It means living without concern for obeying what God has said.

This attitude leads to folly (foolish living) and ruin (Proverbs 1:30; 5:12; 15:5).

Woe: The sixth threat of judgment was against the indulgent lifestyle of the wicked.

The prophet delivered judgment through a song (Isaiah 5:1–7) and prophecies of sorrow (5:8–30). Although Israel's future will be pure and in fellowship with God (Isaiah 4:2–6), it must address the current sinful state of the people and their leaders.
