Or has God attempted to come to take for Himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that YHWH your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

Notes

a strong hand and an outstretched arm: These phrases describe God in human terms. This way of speaking is called anthropomorphism (using human features to describe God; see study note on 8:2).

These words do not mean that God has a physical body like a human. Instead, they show God’s great power. They point to his sovereign strength in rescuing Israel from slavery in Egypt.

Moses gave a long speech to the Israelites because of their recent failures and what he thought would happen in Canaan.

Places

Egypt: Ancient nation; Israelites enslaved there; plagues and Exodus
