Notes

God sending Israel into exile for breaking his covenant was a unique historical event. Israel's exodus from Egypt, their exile, and their return from Babylon remain unmatched (see also Jeremiah 29:10).

To You, O Lord, belongs righteousness: God planned the exile to judge unfaithful Israel (Daniel 9:11–14). God had warned them many times that it would occur (see Deuteronomy 28:36–37, 49–68).

Daniel prayed for his people, knowing that Jerusalem's seventy years of desolation were about to end. His prayer is similar to those of:
