Notes
He Himself will establish a house for you: God planned to do far more for David than David imagined doing for God. David focused on visible projects, such as building a temple. God focused instead on blessing his people through a lasting and righteous family line of kings.
be disturbed no more: Through David and his descendants, God promised lasting peace in the land. This promise contrasted with the time of the judges, when peace came only for short periods and was often broken by attacks from other nations. God first promised “rest from all your enemies” through Joshua (Joshua 1:13, 15; 22:4). This promise was later fulfilled for limited times during the leadership of some of the judges (Judges 3:11, 30; 5:31; 8:28).
Instead of David building a house for God, God promised to build a house for David, meaning a lasting line of kings from David’s family.
David was not happy just making a tent for the ark (2 Samuel 6:17). He wanted to build a house for God.
