Modern
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers.
Traditional
Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.
Literal
…hear my prayer, O YHWH, and turn your ear to my cry; at my tears may You not be silent! For I am a sojourner with You, a sojourner like all my fathers.
Latin
Exaudi orationem meam, Domine, et deprecationem meam; auribus percipe lacrimas meas. Ne sileas, quoniam advena ego sum apud te, et peregrinus sicut omnes patres mei.
Original
Hebrew
English
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers.
Notes
A foreigner could not own land (see Leviticus 25:23). The patriarchs had lived as guests in Canaan (Psalm 105:23).
This prayer for rescue shows the psalmist's discouragement, which comes from not fully understanding his situation.
