Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.

Notes

  • a prophet’s reward: This can mean either the same reward a prophet gets or the benefits of a prophet's service.

  • a righteous man: This is someone who follows God’s law as taught by John the Baptist (Matthew 21:32) and Jesus (see 3:15). This is why God approves of them (13:43, 49; 25:37–46).

Jesus expands his ministry (see Matthew 4:23–9:34) by sending his disciples to other people in Israel (10:5–6). The instructions Jesus gives his disciples (10:5–42) emphasizes missionary work and the opposition and challenges they will encounter.
