Notes

The teachers of the law made a mistake by not realizing that Elijah had already come (see Matthew 17:11–13; compare Malachi 4:5–6). Because of this, they did not recognize that the kingdom of God had already arrived. They also failed to realize that the Messiah's suffering and death, which were predicted in Scripture, were about to take place.
