Original

Greek
English
While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them.

Notes

  • He was reclining at the table with them: The meal is a symbol of the messianic banquet (the future feast when God’s chosen king gathers his people) and of the salvation that God is bringing about (Isaiah 25:6–8; Luke 14:1–24).

  • and broke it, and gave it to them: This action recalls the feeding of the 5,000 (9:16) and the institution of the Lord's Supper (22:19).

Luke alone records this resurrection appearance. Jesus corrected the disciples’ misunderstanding by showing from the Scriptures that the Christ had to suffer. Then he opened their eyes to understand that he had risen from the dead.
