Notes
Using the bread and the cup as symbols of his body and blood, Jesus established the communion meal that his disciples were to continue in remembrance of his death.
This is My body, given for you: The unleavened bread of the Passover represented the death of Jesus as the Passover lamb. He would allow his blood to pour out "for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:28; compare 1 Corinthians 11:24–25).
Jesus celebrated the traditional Jewish Passover but transformed it with reference to his own sacrificial death as the Passover lamb. He also prepared his disciples for his coming death and the leadership role they would assume over his church.
