Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made: Hospitality was highly valued, and Martha was doing what people expected a woman to do in that culture. She was upset that Mary was not helping.

Martha … Mary: These sisters and their brother Lazarus were good friends of Jesus. They lived in Bethany, east of Jerusalem (see John 11:1).
