Notes

Mary … sat at the Lord's feet: She took the position of a disciple (compare Acts 22:3). Rabbis (Jewish religious teachers with authority) usually did not have female disciples.

Martha … Mary: These sisters and their brother Lazarus were good friends of Jesus. They lived in Bethany, east of Jerusalem (see John 11:1).
