Notes

mighty man of valor: Jephthah had military skill and possibly social importance (see study note on Judges 6:12, where mighty man of valor is translated as “mighty hero”). Gilead was a descendant of Manasseh (Numbers 26:29–33; 32:39–40; 1 Chronicles 7:14–17). Jephthah's social standing made him noticeable, despite the shame of his mother being a prostitute. His half-brothers were not required to accept Jephthah's status or leadership.

Jephthah's leadership marked a change. He came from humble beginnings, gained followers, spoke well in debates, and had strong military skills. However, his hasty vow (Judges 11:30–31, 34–35) and his stubborn civil war with Ephraim (12:1–6) overshadowed these qualities. Even his victory lasted only six years (Judges 12:7). This period of decline increased the need for a king.
