Notes
Jesus corrected the people's argument: God, not Moses, fed Israel in the wilderness.
The most important goal in life is to seek the true bread from God. This bread is not ordinary food. It is the gift that gives eternal life. To “eat” this bread means to believe in Jesus and depend on him.
Those who receive this bread share in the life that comes from God and lasts forever.
This dialogue took place in the synagogue at Capernaum shortly before Passover (6:4, 59). During Passover, Jews would read the story of the exodus from Egypt (see Exodus 1–15).
Each story in this chapter uses the setting of the Feast of the Passover (6:4) to communicate a deeper meaning.
