It was the first day of the week, and that very evening, while the disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you!” He said to them.

Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

Therefore, it being evening the same day, the first of the week, and the doors where the disciples were having been shut because of the fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and He says to them, “Peace to you.”

Notes

  • the disciples were together with the doors locked: The disciples were afraid that they might be punished for following Jesus.

  • Peace be with you!: This was a common Jewish greeting (see also 3 John 1:15). But Jesus was doing more than just greeting his disciples. He was offering the Messiah's peace and delivering the gift of his kingdom (see Isaiah 9:6; 52:7; see John 14:27; 16:33).
