Judah’s Sin and Punishment · Jeremiah 8:1–13
Read Jeremiah 8

Translations

Modern
I have listened and heard; they do not speak what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, asking, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone has pursued his own course like a horse charging into battle.
Traditional
I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
Literal
I paid attention and listened; they did not speak what is right; there was no man repenting over his wickedness, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turned to his own course, like a horse rushing into the battle.
Latin
Attendi, et auscultavi: nemo quod bonum est loquitur; nullus est qui agat pœnitentiam super peccato suo, dicens: Quid feci? Omnes conversi sunt ad cursum suum, quasi equus impetu vadens ad prælium.

Notes

The Lord, who can hear everything (compare Luke 12:3), heard the people even when they spoke in private. Their words did not match reality, and no one felt sorry for doing wrong. Like a horse charging into battle without thinking of death or danger, they did not consider the consequences of their sins.

These verses list the evidence of Judah's sins. The people engaged in ritual sex related to idol worship. They followed idol worship practices. They stayed in their delusions because lies trapped their minds and hearts. The term "lies" often refers to idols (Jeremiah 5:3, 6; 7:24; 9:6; Proverbs 24:16; Isaiah 44:20; Amos 5:2; Micah 7:8).

These three short poems were likely shared during the reign of Jehoiakim.
