Because the Lord GOD helps Me, I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set My face like flint, and I know that I will not be put to shame.

Notes

  • Externally, the servant would be disgraced and shamed by others. However, inside himself he would wait calmly for God to prove that he was right (see Isaiah 29:22; 54:4; 61:7). He trusted that God would defend him and clear his name.

  • set My face like flint: The servant would be determined to follow God's will (see Luke 9:51).

This is the third of four servant songs (see study note on Isaiah 42:1–4). The loyal and suffering servant represents an ideal Israel. This image came true in Jesus Christ.
