Original

Hebrew
English
On the day that the LORD gives you rest from your pain and torment, and from the hard labor into which you were forced,

Notes

The LORD gives … rest (repose; Isaiah 28:12; see Deuteronomy 25:19; 2 Samuel 7:11) from the sorrow, fear, slavery, and chains that Israel experienced under foreign oppressors (see Isaiah 9:4).

This taunting song about the king of Babylon is written like a funeral song. It speaks as if the king has already died.

The song mocks him and announces his downfall (compare Revelation 18).
