Read Haggai 1

Translations

Modern
You expected much, but behold, it amounted to little. And what you brought home, I blew away. Why? declares the LORD of Hosts. Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.
Traditional
Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the Lord of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
Literal
You turned for much, and behold, little; and you brought it home, and I blew it away. Because of what? An utterance of YHWH of Hosts, because of My house, the way that it is in ruins, while you are running, each man to his house.
Latin
Respexistis ad amplius, et ecce factum est minus; et intulistis in domum, et exsufflavi illud: quam ob causam? dicit Dominus exercituum: quia domus mea deserta est, et vos festinatis unusquisque in domum suam.

Notes

  • I blew away: The Lord destroyed the harvest because the people focused only on themselves, not on God.

  • declares the LORD of Hosts: This is a common God-as-speaker formula (a set phrase that shows God is speaking). It often appears at the close of a prophecy and confirms that the message truly comes from God (Haggai 1:13; 2:8, 17, 23).

The first message urges the people of Jerusalem to restore proper worship of God.
