You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough. You drink but never have your fill. You put on clothes but never get warm. You earn wages to put into a bag pierced through.”
Traditional

Literal
You have sown much, and you have brought in little; you eat, and not to satisfaction; you drink, and not to drunkenness; One wears clothes, and there is no warmth to it; and the wage earner earns wages into a bag pierced through.”
Latin
Seminastis multum, et intulistis parum; comedistis, et non estis satiati; bibistis, et non estis inebriati; operuistis vos, et non estis calefacti; et qui mercedes congregavit, misit eas in sacculum pertusum.

English
You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough. You drink but never have your fill. You put on clothes but never get warm. You earn wages to put into a bag pierced through.”

Notes

  • eat … drink … put on clothes: Each action shows a continuous process. You keep filling your plates, keep drinking, and put on layer after layer of clothes. This increases the feeling of futility.

  • a bag pierced through: This image represents the loss of wages. Many families faced poverty despite their steady work.

The first message urges the people of Jerusalem to restore proper worship of God.
