Notes
God injured Jacob’s hip. This limited Jacob’s pride and self-reliance (depending on his own strength). Because God reduced his natural strength, Jacob had to trust the Lord more.
Jacob thought he could return to his land by outsmarting his brother again (32:3–21). But at the border of the land, he met its true owner. He would receive the land, but only if God fought for him.
Self-reliance (trying to gain God’s blessing by our own strength or by worldly ways) will not succeed. If we continue in this way, God may need to weaken our self-reliance so that we trust him more.
Jacob went back to the land God promised him. Before this, God met, injured, and blessed him. God also changed his name to Israel. This event was a significant turning point for Jacob.
