For if the inheritance is by the law, it is no longer by a promise. But God has granted it to Abraham through a promise.
Latin
Nam si ex lege hæreditas, jam non ex promissione. Abrahæ autem per repromissionem donavit Deus.

Original

Greek
English
For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God freely granted it to Abraham through a promise.

Notes

The inheritance cannot come from obeying the law, because that would cancel God’s promise to Abraham (see 4:1–7). This promise was accepted by faith before God gave the law to Moses.

Jesus, not the law, has fulfilled the promise and agreement (covenant) made with Abraham.
