Notes
In this covenant of peace (a promise of restored relationship with God), God’s people receive the blessings that come from being whole in their relationship with him. This covenant was not completely new. It was like the covenant God made at Mount Sinai.
The Sinai covenant promised true and lasting peace. However, the people did not experience that peace because of their sin. They broke their relationship with God again and again.
In the past, Israel’s kings failed to lead the people well. In this new covenant, God would give them a new and perfect king. The broken relationship with God would be restored.
God’s people would again belong to him. They would be like sheep who belong to their shepherd. The covenant would reach its goal when the Sovereign Lord was their God and lived among them once more.
These chapters describe the blessings that would come when the Lord returned to his people.
He would be their shepherd. He would give them good and faithful leadership (Ezekiel 34).
He would make the land fruitful again. In this way, he would show that his name is honored and holy (Ezekiel 35–36).
He would bring his people back to life and make them one nation again (Ezekiel 37).
