In covenant contexts, a blessing is the outcome of obedience, while a curse is the result of disobedience (see chapters 27–28).

Here, Moses adds to the covenant stipulations (the commands in chapters 5–11) a list of blessings and curses. These blessings and curses are similar to the longer list that appears at the end of the covenant text in 27–28. They show the results of obeying or disobeying the covenant.
