Notes

In Roman times, political power in Achaia was centered in Corinth, an important city-state and a major center for trade. Corinth became known for widespread prostitution, sexual immorality (wrong sexual behavior), and drunkenness (see 1 Corinthians Book Introduction, “Setting”).

Paul spent a great deal of time and effort building a Christian community there (see study note on Acts 16:8).

Paul spent 18 productive months preaching and teaching in Corinth. He started in the synagogue and then moved next door to the house of Titius Justus (18:1–11). Then Paul won an important case in court against his opponents (18:12–17).
