Notes

Jesus Christ, descended from David, resurrected from the dead (see Romans 1:3–4). It's important to understand suffering with Christ from the point of view of future resurrection.

The apostle Paul’s suffering is an extension of the suffering of Jesus Christ. It emphasizes the crucifixion and resurrection as the core of the good news about Jesus (1:12; see also 1:8). Paul’s suffering, like Christ’s, helped bring salvation to others. Christ approves of those who suffer and endure with him.

Timothy is again told to be strong and endure suffering with Paul (2:1–7; see 1:8). Timothy should find motivation in the good news about Jesus and in Paul's example (2:8–13).
