Notes

  • Hymenaeus previously worked with Alexander (1 Timothy 1:20). Both men continued to cause trouble through false teaching (2 Timothy 4:14–15).

  • Philetus became Hymenaeus's new teaching partner.

Timothy must focus on Paul's teaching and avoid the teachings and behavior of false teachers 2:8–13. The false teachings were probably similar to those in 1 Timothy 6:20–21.
